Evaluation of constructivist learning environments by classroom teachers and primary school students

The aim of this research is to evaluate a constructivist learning environment by classroom teachers and their primary school students according to constructivist learning point of view.The sample is consisted of 100 classroom teachers and 1000 primary school students from 10 schools in Sultanbeyli district of İstanbul. Social Constructivism and Active Learning Environments (S.C.A.L.E.) scale is used to collect the data.The research showed that, students? perception about the constructivist classroom environment do not differ according to the gender and grade level, however within a limited number of sub scales there observed a difference (in perception) favourable to the 4th grades and to the girls in this matter. Also observed is that, teachers with 16-year or more teaching experience perceived constructivist classroom environment more positively than others. In creation of constructivist learning environment it is observed that the classroom teachers had the least guidance support from student?s parents, and the most guidance help from guidance teacher; had the least encouragement help from guidance teacher and the most encouragement help from school principal; and finally had the least source supplying help from supervisors and the most source supplying help from their colleagues.Keywords: Constructivist learning approach, classroom teacher, new primary school program
