Classroom teachers' views on social media teachers and students interaction

Abstract (EN)

The current technological developments and its use by wide mass has caused the technological devices such as smart phones, tablets and computers, to be a part of daily lives and social media that reaches a wide range of users with the help of this devices, has attracted many people from all sections of society and so it has become an important area in which lives of people take place. It can not be ignored that the children who are born in technology age meet social media before they begin their school life. Therefore the use of social media in education and teacher- student interaction in this platform become the subject of this research. Because of this, the ideas of the teachers who work in Bolu district, on teacher – student interaction are tried to be searched by this survey. In this research, mixed research methods and tehcniques in which qualitative and quantitive datas were both included, were used. 348 teachers who worked at primary schools of national education ministry in Bolu province in 2017-2018 became the research universe of this survey. On research data "Teacher- Student Interaction on Social Media Scale" that was developed by Korucu and Usta was applied to find out teachers' perception about teacher - student interaction on social media. In qualitive part of the research, 10 women, 10 men primary school teachers from the schools of Bolu city centre were discussed face to face by the researcher. The results of the research, according to the opinions of the teachers who participated in the research, "undecided" ın at the point of interaction with students on social media.. Virtual leader aspect of the research that was one of the alter categories of, was " I agree"; traditional teacher aspect of it, was " I don' t agree"; observing "responsive" teacher aspect was " I don' t agree"; the aspect of virtual activity of the research was " I don' t agree", the social cooperation aspect of it was indesicive and the academic cooperation aspect of the research was "I agree". In this research the aspect of "traditional teacher" that was an alter aspect of the research changed according to "gender" that was one of the variances studied in the research. According the this difference which was in male teachers favour, the fact that male teachers had more traditional attitude than women teachers' on social media. According to teachers' "educational background" and 'class population' aspects of the research, there was no difference on their views but considering "age" and "seniority" variables of the research, younger participants who had lower seniority were more likely to have benefits of social media than the ones who were older had higher rank. According to the data that was obtained as a result of face to face interview with the teachers who were the participants of this research, the teachers were indecisive on the issue of social media interaction with the students because they could be accused legally of their sharing on social media as they were misunderstood and their special life could be violated or they could have problems during their face to face communication with their students because of insufficiency that could appear on classroom management. Some of the face-to-face interviews with the teachers who participated in the research were that the teachers felt unstable because of their misinterpretations due to their sharing, they could be subject to legal sanctions, their private lives could be violated due to their sharing, they could be violated their personal lives and the authorities in the classroom could be shaken by face to face problems with their students. In addition, it was determined that the students were more involved in their academic studies, sharing their methods and strategies, interacting with other teachers, informing the students and honoring the activities in the classroom.
