Investigation of desired and undesired student behavior caused by parent attitudes in classroom management

In this study, it is aimed to investigate the desired and undesired student behaviour caused by the attitudes of parents in classroom management. As a research pattern, the phenomenology pattern was used in terms of qualitative research methods. The working group of this study consists of 25 classroom teachers, working in 10 public primary schools in Yozgat province in the 2019-2020 academic years. In this study, working group was determined by purposeful sampling method. In the criterion sampling the professional seniority of the teachers was considered at least five years and teaching in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th grade in primary school. The research data were collected through the semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher and analyzed with content analysis. In this study, the most frequently recurring undesired student behaviors caused by parents' attitude are violence, swearing and not doing homework; the most frequently recurring desired student behaviors are acting respectfully and fulfilling their responsibilities. It was investigated that while the overly tolerant, negligent, authoritarian, inconsistent, overly protective attitude of parents is effective in the emergence of undesired student behavior, the democratic attitude of parents is effective in the emergence of desired student behavior. The most common undesired behavior was investigated as not fulfilling the responsibilities, and it was determined that all parental attitudes are effective in the emergence of this behavior. Additionally, it was found that the parental attitude that causes the most problematic behavior is overly tolerant, parental attitude, and then negligent, authoritarian, inconsistent and protective parental attitude. It was concluded while undesired student behaviors disrupt education in classroom management, disrupt friendship relations, decrease classroom success and spread unwanted behaviors desired student behaviors increase teacher motivation, time devoted to education and academic achievement, decrease unwanted behaviors, and positively affect sharing and friendship relations. Furthermore, it was found that there was a relationship between parental attitudes and desired and undesired student behavior in classroom management.
