The investigation of relationship between borderline personality disorder features and food addiction

The aim of this research is to study the relationship between food addiction and the borderline personality disorder traits. Yale Food Addiction Scale, Borderline Personality Scale, and Sociodemographic Form were used as data collection tools in this study. A total number of 795 participants, 583 women and 212 men, participated voluntarily to the study. Participants were between the ages of 18 and 62. The data were analyzed with IBM SPSS version 21.0. Studying the relationship between food addiction and sociodemographic characteristics reveals significant correlation with gender, body mass index (BMI), psychiatric drug use, suicide attempt history, and childhood obesity history. Moreover, analysis of borderline personality traits and sociodemographic characteristics demonstrated significant correlation with gender, age, BMI, psychiatric drug use, suicide attempt history, smoking and substance use habits. Furthermore, a significant relationship was found between the total score of the Yale food addiction scale and the Borderline Personality Scale total score and all sub-dimension scores. Food addiction and borderline personality disorder can be seen as comorbid. It is believed that this study's findings may assist clinical staff in the evaluation and treatment process of patients.
