Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to explore the experiences of individuals who define themselves as social media addicts. In particular, it is aimed to understand how the excessive use of social media affects the lives of the participants and the meaning they attribute to it. For this purpose, a qualitative research method was used. Semi- structured interviews were conducted with six participants. In the light of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the data was analyzed to find the emerging themes. In this thesis, five superordinate themes were found. These themes were: (1) social media as a medium of escapism, (2) social media as symbol of power, (3) valuation and devaluation regarding social media and its contents, (4) feeling of losing self-control, and (5) positioning with respect to the authority figures. The emerging themes were discussed with the framework of Lacanian psychoanalytic theory. Keywords: Social Media Addiction, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Lacanian Psychoanalysis
