Abstract (EN)

This thesis analyses the deep effect of socialist ideology on family dynamics and the obstacles encountered by individuals in a capitalist society, as portrayed in Arnold Wesker's plays Chicken Soup with Barley and I'm Talking About Jerusalem. The plays explore the impact of contrasting political perspectives within the family, emphasizing the potential for radical or conservative inclinations. They also explore the repercussions of the capitalist system, including themes of alienation and exploitation, and questions the feasibility of various political systems. In the face of adversity and disappointment, the characters display a strong determination and refuse to surrender without a fight. In accordance with this, this thesis explores how Wesker's plays examine the complexities of human nature, shedding light on the challenges individuals encounter in their quest for a more ideal society. It presents the impact of personal vulnerabilities, societal frameworks, and the dehumanizing consequences of relentless labour. The thesis offers a comprehensive analysis of the great impact of socialist ideology and the obstacles encountered by individuals in a capitalist society, as portrayed in Wesker's plays.
