Investigation of corrosive environment resistance of lightweight concrete produced under cold weather condition

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of corrosive environment on light concrete exposed to cold weather. In the scope of the study, concrete samples of the carrier light concrete strength class are produced. Some of the concrete samples are produced with antifreeze additive used as concrete admixture in cold weather. In this way, the effectiveness of antifreeze additive in lightweight concrete is determined. Concrete samples exposed to normal conditions and cold air (0oC, -5oC, -10oC) for 2 days in fresh condition after production are cured until the 28th day after removal from the mold. The curing time completed concrete samples are subjected to 10 cycles of wetting-drying in solutions of NaCl (salt) and NaSO4 (sodium sulfate) which have 5% and 10% concentration. Compressive strength, tensile strength, capillary, impermeability and weight change tests are carried out on the concrete specimens whose wetting-drying cycle is completed. The obtained data are compared with the temperature value which the lightweight concrete samples are exposed to in fresh form and according to the condition of with or without the antifreeze additive. As a result, it has been determined that the concrete samples exposed to normal conditions provide the best performance against corrosive environments and they have loses in physical and mechanical properties with the decrease of the temperature value which the concrete samples exposed to in fresh form.
