The western perception of Turkish conservativism during cold war

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the Turkish Conservatism which is a popular ideology and has a complex structure because of its close connection with nationalism and Islamism. For that reason; the emergence of western conservatism have been analyzed with its evolution and specifications. In the second part of the thesis, the features of the Turkish conservativism and its improvement from Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey has been studied. In the third part the Western perception of the Turkish conservative thinkers (Peyami Safa, Cemil Meriç, Necip Fazıl, Nurettin Topçu ) have been examined during the Cold War Era. In the fourth part the western perception of the Turkish conservative politicians (Adnan Menderes, Süleyman Demirel, Necmettin Erbakan and Alpaslan Türkeş) was revealed during the Cold War. The Turkish conservatives, who took a positive attitude towards the western technique, generally rejected the adaptation of the western culture and while advocating the use of Western values in the field of science, they opposed Western values in the field of culture. However, they had positive attitude to the political and military alliance wtih the West during the the Cold War Era because of the treat of the Soviet Union.
