Abstract (EN)
One of the most crucial periods of international relations is the Cold War period. Commonly Cold War is dated from 1945 to 1990. The Détente period concerns a time interval from the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962) to the Helsinki Final Act (1972). Within this period superpowers, the USA and the USSR and both blocs started a new policy of `peaceful co-existence?. Nuclear war was not an option for the world, thus despite the conflict, countries choose a strategy of immense diplomacy culminated with trade and cultural agreements. The Republic of Turkey, a loyal member of the Western Bloc, went through important changes domestically and in matters of foreign policy during this period. This thesis provides a genuine insight to Turkey?s strategies, aims and behaviors. Not just because of the change of international scene, but also because of the need to industrialize and to gain support regarding Cyprus, Turkish governments re-organized the Turkish foreign policy and implemented it with enthusiasm despite internal problems of democratization, fast urbanization and economical problems. As an important part of understanding détente period, the author compared Federal Republic of Germany with the Republic of Turkey. In the conclusion, the authors? finding is that Turkey was successful in reaching her goal of industrialization during the détente period due to her improving ties with the USSR.
