Concantric circle ceramics at soli höyük in middle and late iron ages(İ.Ö.IX-VII.yy.)

IX-VII. yy.)Seçil Canl%erDokuz Eylül UniversityInstitute of Social SciencesDepartmant of Classical ArchaeologyCeramic fragments with concentric circle motifs found inSoloi/Pompeiopolis which is an important port city located on trade routesbetween East and West in VIII. and VII. century B.C. are related to Cyprusalthough they have some differences in decoration and techniques. That?s whythese fragments have been identified as White Painted, Biochrome and Black onRed according to classification of Cyprus ceramics made by Gjerstad based oncolor of clay and slip. Fragments number 86-92 which are not related to thesementioned groups have been identified as Euboea Style ceramics. Fragmentsthat have been worked on include 4 cups, 1 plate, 1 dinos, 2 crater lips and bodyfragments of craters and jugs.In Soloi/Pompeiopolis, slope of the hill, pouring soil and Hellenistic andRoman settlement has destroyed older remains. That?s why most of thefragments of concentric circle ceramics have been found within Hellenistic,Classic and Archaic layers. Yet in D7, E7, E8, F6, F7 and F9 trenches inbetween 18.20 and 17.30 meters stratigraphy could have been observed for LateIron Age.Similar examples of concentric circle ceramics of Soloi/Pompeiopolis areseen in Cyprus, Crete, Al-Mina, Tarsus and Kilisetepe. With the help of theseexamples concentric circle ceramics found in Soloi/Pompeiopolis have been havebeen dated to Middle (850-700 B.C.) and Late (700-600 B.C.)
