The contribution of intangible cultural heritage to qutstanding universal value of UNESCO world heritage sites: An analytical evaluation on cultural landscapes

Until the 20th century, the scope of the properties that needed to be preserved did not go beyond single monumental structures and the discussions conducted within the conservation discipline focused on the restoration principles and techniques of these buildings. The properties that need to be protected, which we see today with the term cultural heritage, have been defined with the perspectives that have dominated the period throughout history and the limits on their scope have been drawn. At the point reached today, the scope of cultural heritage has expanded beyond tangible cultural heritages such as monuments, sites and group of buildings, and has expanded to include the whole of meanings and representations with which these elements are related, namely, intangible cultural heritage elements. In this process, enriched by the contributions of various disciplines, the relationship between the tangible and intangible cultural components of cultural heritage and the meaning of this relationship in terms of protection were frequently discussed, and these discussions brought new concepts such as cultural landscape. During the development process of the concept of cultural heritage, legal regulations have been prepared, approaching the issue from various angles. Agreement, regulation, declaration, report, etc. prepared by UNESCO, it is seen that it pioneered this process with regulations, protection practices and protection tools it carried out. In this context, in this study, in which the tangible cultural heritages and the intangible cultural heritages they are associated with are addressed in a holistic manner, the World Heritage List, which is one of the protection tools of UNESCO, the criteria (vi) and the World Heritage Cultural Landscapes is the focus of this study. The primary purpose of this study is to reveal the coexistence of tangible and intangible cultural heritage elements in the context of the World Heritage List and to evaluate the contribution of the intangible cultural heritage elements to which the World Heritage Sites are associated with Outstanding Universal Value.
