Trabzon arsenals in the context of last period ottoman military architecture

The arsenals, which were known to exist in almost every period during the centuries-long empire of the Ottoman Empire, but continued to be built by changing their location and form with the late Ottoman military architecture, are closed and protected spaces that provide the storage of all kinds of explosives and ammunition. In Trabzon, which was one of the military bases of the Ottoman Empire with its geographical and strategic location, arsenals had an important function in the storage of both the ammunition needed by the city and the ammunition coming to be shipped to other fronts. The main purpose of this study is to determine the existence of arsenals built in Trabzon during the Ottoman Period or used by the State and to evaluate these structures in the context of the late Ottoman military architecture. In this context, the study consists of 4 chapters. In the general information section, the theoretical framework of the study is drawn. In the studies section, information about the late Ottoman military architecture is given and examples of arsenals built in Istanbul, Anatolia and other places where the Ottoman Empire was dominant are analyzed. The diversification of arsenal buildings necessitated a certain categorization of the structures. The existence of certain elements specific to arsenals made it necessary to create a terminology, and a typology was attempted in line with the similar or different aspects of the buildings. In the Findings and Evaluations section, the existing arsenals in Trabzon were identified, inventoried and analyzed in detail in the light of visual and archival documents.
