Researching the effect of social network on academic achievement: Using Facebook in 6th and 7th grade Science and English lessons

Abstract (EN)

Emerging technology affects education as well as every aspects of life. One of these effects is social media tools. Facebook, which has the highest number of users from social media tools, has been used as a learning environment in thesis work. In order to measure the effects, experimental and control groups were established and experimental models were applied in quantitative research methods in Science and English lessons. This thesis study was carried out in Atatürk Secondary School which is a state school in Saraykoy District of Denizli Province in the academic year of 2015-2016. The sample group of 339 students in the universe was composed of 176 students (90 experimental groups and 86 control groups). The aim of the study was to measure the effects of using Facebook in Science and English lessons for students' success. The data obtained from the sample group in the direction of the study purposes were analyzed in the SPSS 24.0 package program. Within the scope of the analyzes, dependent groups t-test, independent groups t-test and ANOVA analyzes were performed. As a result of the analyzes, it was seen that Facebook had a positive effect on Science and English lessons. Keywords: Facebook, Science, English, Teaching, SPSS, Social Media.
