Description of application level of values to be given directly in "one country, one flag" unit in fifth class social studies lesson

ABSTRACT DESCRIPTION OF APPLICATION LEVEL OF VALUES TO BE GIVEN DIRECTLY IN "ONE COUNTRY, ONE FLAG" UNIT IN FIFTH CLASS SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON Selim HARMANCI Department of Primary School (Class Teacher) Thesis Advisor: Yrd. Dr. Elif ALADAĞ January 2014 This is a descriptive study which aims to specify the application level of "values to be given directly" in the class of Social Studies in the fifth class of primary schools. Qualitative research method has been used for the general purpose and the problem of the study. The study group consists of three school and three class teachers chosen from the fifth class teachers of central state primary schools in 2011-2012 education year in Çine, Aydın. The technique of unstructured observation has been applied to study how a teacher has given 'value to be given directly' in "One Country, One Flag" unit in Social Studies lesson in the classroom environment. The observer has stated his opinion by keeping a diary during observation. In light of the data obtained through observation, it has been accomplished both to ensure the reliability of data obtained from the diary and to attain the additional data by making semi-structured interviews with those teachers. Descriptive analysis has been carried out in the phase of analysing data in the study. These results have been reached according to the study. 1. It has been concluded that the teachers are using only indoctrination method of value teaching approaches, 2. It has been observed that the teachers are using methods and techniques such as question-answer method, giving examples from the lives of important people, being a model, using historical events, giving examples from his own life, associating with other concepts, giving examples from students' own lives, indicating a model, using visuals, using current events to teach the 'values to be given directly' in Social Studies in fifth class of primary school. It has been observed that the teachers are generally using the students' course books and workbooks as a source while teaching values. Additionally, the constitution, flag statute, assignment book, emblems, poems and internet have been used by the teachers depending on the unit attainments. 3. It has been stated that the teachers asses the values directly given to the students through observation. 4. It has been supported by the opinions of teachers that they have found value teaching favourable. On the other hand, it has been determined that the primary problem faced while teaching values is lack of assistance of parents and disagreement between the school and the parents. It has been concluded that it is necessary to focus on visual activities in practical and arrange observational study trips to give the students value teaching more effectively.
