The effects of multiple intelligences theory supported with cooperative learning on achievement in teaching the unit our Turkey of the geography lesson which is one of the 6th grade social sciences lessons

This study has been carried out to research the effects of multipleintelligences theory supported with cooperative learning on achievement in teachingthe unit ?Our Turkey? of the geography lesson which is one of the 6th grade socialsciences lessons. In the study, ?pre-test post-test control group pattern? has beenused.The practice study has been carried out at Vali Fahrettin Akkutlu PrimarySchool in Çanakkale in the second term of 2005-2006 education periods. At thisschool, over 60 students educated in the 6th grade, 32 students in 6/A class haveconstituted of the experiment group whereas 28 students in 6/B class haveconstituted of the control group.Multiple intelligences theory supported with cooperative learning wasapplied in the experiment group, whereas the control group has been taught in thetraditional methods. Data have been collected with ?Personal Data Form?, ?MultipleIntelligences Domain Determination Scale? and ?Achievement Test?.At the end of the study, whereas the average of the pre-test scores of thestudents in the experiment group was 21.81 ± 3.30, their post-test average has beenfound as 32.00 ± 4.60. As for the control group, while average of pre-test scores was21.78 ± 4.58, their post-test average has been found as 24.03 ± 4.58. Through theanalysis of the averages of both groups? post-test scores, it has been determined thatthis difference is significantly meaningful in the favour of experiment group at anadvanced level (p<0.01).As for the averages of permanence test scores, it was 32.87 ± 4.47 forexperiment group, whereas it was 24.82 ± 4.51 for the control group. After thestatistical analysis, it has been concluded that this difference is also significantlymeaningful in the favour of experiment group at an advanced level (p<0.01).Findings obtained at the end of the research indicate that there was nodifference between pre-test scores of the control and the experiment groups prior tothe study. After the practice, there found meaningful differences in the favour ofexperiment group in the light of the averages of the post-test scores and thepermanence test scores. These results prove that the experimental study is successful.
