Views on social studies course instruction program

The main aim of this study is; to determine 6th class of elementary educationstudents?, social studies teachers?, administrators of schools? and supervisors ofelementary education?s opinion about social studies curriculum.After the scan of literature for data collection, semi-structured questions ofnegotiation were prepared according to the specialist?s conception. Preparedquestions were administered in pilot schools and in normal schools which educatesby ordinary instruction in Samsun city. In negotiations; informations about theeffectiveness and adaptability of this curriculum program were found out fromcommon questions asked to teachers, administrators and supervisors. The questions -that asked to students- are generally related to the quality of curriculum. The findingsof study are analyzed according to content analysis method.Results of this study are;It was determined that, the majority of 6th class of elementary educationstudents had a positive attitude to social studies and curriculum. Students stated that,incresing the variety of method and technique of lessons is important for them.Although the majority of social studies? teachers stated that, they werepleased with the social studies curriculum, also they stated that because of somedeficiency of program, the productivity was decrised. The main deficiencies were thelack of materials, physical conditions of schools,the problems about the environmentof classes,time problem and lack of course books. Moreover, teachers declared thatinservice-trainings were not enough,and in inservice-trainings, charged supervisorscouldn?t understand them and the conditions of them.The majority of administrators had a positive attitude to curriculum. Theadministrators ?who thought that the modification in curriculum is necessary-declared that because of lack of sources and materials the productivity of curriculumwas decreased.All of the supervisors stated that the modification in curriculum is necessary.The supervisor-who had a positive attitude to curriculum- indicated that there aresome teachers who didn?t want to improve themselves and didn?t want themodification in curriculum. Besides, supervisors stated that, because of insufficiencyof inservice-trainings, the productivity of curriculum was decreased.Social studies? teachers, administrators and supervisors declared that, if thematerials, resources and other facilities were provided to schools in a equitable way,then curriculum could be productively put into practice.Key Words: Social Studies, Curriculum Evaluation, Teacher, Student, SchoolAdministrator, Supervisor
