The effects of activities with historical empathy technique on perceiving time and chronology in social studies lesson on academic success

Teaching history subjects takes a large place in the Social studıes lesson. The ability of students at level of upper primary education to perceive time and chronology is a prerequisite for understanding these issues. The activities in the lessons have an important place in order to develop the ability to perceive time and chronology. In this research, the effects of activities performed with the historical empathy technique on the ability to perceive time and chronology were observed. The research was conducted with the students of Orduzu Elif Şireli Secondary School and Cevat Çobanlı Secondary School in Battalgazi district of Malatya province. The mixed research method was used in this study, and the quantitative dimension of the research was arranged according to the experimental design with pre-test and post-test control group. Academic achievement test results were analyzed with SPSS 25 data analysis program. The results obtained from the semi-structured interview form were evaluated by content analysis. In the quantitative dimension of the research, statistically meaningful differences in favor of the experimental group were found in the post-test study applied to the experimental group and the control group. In the qualitative dimension of the research, when the semi-structured interview form results applied to the experimental group as a result of the activities are evaluated, it is seen that the students liked the historical empathy activities.
