The examination of gender phenomenon in pre-service social studies teachers' family perceptions

Abstract (EN)

Social Studies course aims that the person adopt social institutions and rules, and exist with have a democratic personality. Social Studies is one of the courses where family and gender-sensitive education can be given. In the Social Studies course, it is considered important to determine the perceptions of teacher candidates who will give family and gender-sensitive education towards these issues. In this research, it is aimed to understand how the perceptions of Social Studies teacher candidates towards family and gender, and to examine how the courses that include family and gender issues in the Social Studies Teacher Education Program shape the perceptions of prospective teachers towards these issues. In the study, phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The data of the study were obtained from semi-structured interviews and observations. The data were analyzed inductively through the NVivo 12 program. As a result of the research, the family perceptions of teacher candidates; it is explained in line with the relations within the family, the reasons for establishing a family, the meanings of the family and in-family learning. The gender perceptions' were conveyed within the framework of patriarchal system, women, man, gender equity, and the formation of gender roles. The way the Globalization and Society, Social Anthropology and History of Civilization courses shape their perceptions' were determined that the changes in teacher candidates, and what was noticed about gender in the analyzed movies, articles, documentaries. It has been understood that the teach of courses like this: with the experiences of teachers/ students and current events, creating discussion platform, by analyzing articles, and documentaries. Suggestions were presented for adding a gender lesson to Teacher Education Program and the way this lesson was taught.
