Developing information literacy levels of social studies teacher candidates

Abstract (EN)

Information is a vital important concept to understand the events and phenomenon, occurring the indiviual's enviroment. Increasingly diversified information from the past to the present has played a leading role in human life in every period. The fact that information is so important in human life has made the effective use of information necessary. In this context, it was aimed to improve the information literacy of social studies teacher candidates in the research. Mixed method, quantative and qualitative research methods, was utilised in the study. In the quantitative dimension of the research, quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest control group; In the qualitative dimension, the phenomenology design was used. The quantitative dimension of study a semi-experimental design, pretest- posttest control group, was used. In this context, the quantitative dimension of the study was conducted with total of 45 social studies teacher canditates, including 25 in the experimental group studying in the second grade of Social Studies Education Undergraduate Program of Kastamonu University and 20 in the control group. Therefore, the qualitative dimension of the study was conduct with 45 teacher canditates, studying second grade of Social Studies Education at the Faculty of Education in Kastamonu University, experimental procedure was applied in a quantitative dimension. Data collection tools, utilised in the study, vary from quantitative to qualitative dimensions. In the quantitative dimension of the study, Information Literacy Academic Achievement Test, Information Literacy Behavior Scale, Information Literacy Affective Tendency Scale and Information Literacy Analytical Rubric were used. In the qualitative dimension, the interview form and self-evaluation form developed by the researcher were used. In the analysis of quantitative data was utilised SPSS 22.0 package program. In this scope, quantitative data of the study were analyzed by the help of two-way analysis of variance and kruskal wallis h test for mixed measurements. Pertaining to the findings of quantitative dimension of the study it was found that there is difference in favor of post-test between the scores of social studies teacher candidates from the key of pretest and post-test information literacy, academic achievement, behavior, affective disposition and graded scoring. Findings, acquired qualitative self-assessment and focus group interviews it was determined that social studies teacher canditates obtained awareness in terms of using information literacy skills effectively.
