Benefit from family in cultural heritage education according to social studies teachers

Cultural heritage includes cultural elements that people have created, accumulated and transferred to future generations from past to present. Taught in primary and secondary schools, the social studies course covers subjects related to cultural heritage over a broad range of content and remains as one of the basic courses in which cultural heritage education will be carried out while family, which is the very first institution where we obtain our knowledge about culture, is also an important resource that can be used in cultural heritage education within the scope of social studies course. This research seeks to shed light on the views and experiences of social studies teachers in order to facilitate the participation of the family in cultural heritage education in the social studies course. Basic qualitative research design was adopted in the study. Participants of the study consisted of twenty social studies teachers working in secondary schools in Eskisehir in the 2021-2022 educational year. The research data were collected using semi-structured interview technique and analysed through deductive analysis. As a result of the research, social studies teachers ensuring family participation in cultural heritage education for teachers, students and families it turned out that they were of the opinion that there would be various benefits. Moreover, it has also been revealed that social studies teachers' think that it will have various benefits for teachers, students and families, and will contribute to the creation of an effective and fun learning environment. Social studies teachers have stated that they do various activities in and out of school with the participation of families for cultural heritage education. In line with the results obtained from the research, it can be recommended to create awareness among families and teachers about ensuring family participation in cultural heritage education in social studies course and to carry out practical researches by ensuring family participation in cultural heritage education in social studies course.
