Opinions of social studies teachers on the relationship between social studies teaching and history discipline

Purpose of the research; It is an examination of the thoughts of Social Studies teachers regarding the importance of the History discipline in teaching Social Studies. For this purpose, the phenomenology model, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the research. The research was conducted with 40 Social Studies teachers working in schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education in Bursa in the 2022-2023 academic year. A semi-structured interview form was used as a data collection tool in the research. The data obtained in the research were analyzed by content analysis. As a result of the research, it was determined that all Social Studies teachers were of the opinion that there was a relationship between Social Studies teaching and the History discipline. History discipline is used effectively in Social Studies teaching. Social Studies teaching and History discipline are parts of an inseparable whole. By teaching history to students, in addition to historical knowledge; It may be easier and healthier to gain concepts such as national consciousness and common values. The discipline of history is useful in teaching Social Studies in terms of creating a link between the past and the future. Social Studies teachers have a common opinion that it is possible to provide students with the values, basic skills and achievements in the Social Studies curriculum through the discipline of History.
