The relationship between anxiety disorders and sudden cardiac death has been known for a long time and on this issue many studies have been made.Inanxiety disorders heart rate variability is reduced and this condition has been associated with sudden cardiac death. Panic disorder and social phobia are the anxiety disorders which seen common in the community. Life time prevalence of panic disorder have been reported as 1-2% in the general population. It has been seen two times higher in women than men. The age of onset of the disorders hows two-peaked distribution at theage of 15-25 and 45-54 and the frequency starts to decrease steadily with age. 93 people were included to the study who were diagnosed with panic disorder (33), social phobia (25) and healthy control group (35). In our study, while there was nosignificant difference at SDNN values between panic disorder the control group (p <0.01), SDNN values in social phobia group were lower than the control group (p=0,570). SDANN values remained above 50 ms in all patient groups. While there was significant difference at SDANN measurements between panic disorder and social phobia (p = 0.065) and social phobia and control group (p = 1),there was nosignificant difference between panic disorder with the control group (p = 0.013) and all the three groups (p = 0.011). Results from our study, we have obtained that in patients with panic disorder and social phobia, the parameters of heart rate variability is reduced compared with the control group and we suggest that these patients must be assesed more careful for sudden cardiac death and other cardiac events.
