Social work intervention to refugees and asylum seekers with the social worker's perspective in Turkey

Abstract (EN)
Purpose: Social workers were hired for the first time to work with refugees and asylum seekers with the Foreigners and International Protection Law No. 6458. With this procurement, the social welfare services that can be offered to the refugees have come to the agenda. The aim of this study is to identify the problems that social workers who work with refugees have in relation to reflect the knowledge, skills and values of the profession to their work. Materials and methods: The research datas were collected from social workers who are working under Ministry of Interior Directorate General of Migration Management between 10.05.2016 – 1.9.2017 dates. The datas were analyzed by thematic analysis. Results: Problems experienced by refugees and asylum seekers according to the experience of social workers in the field; economic problems, health and communication problems. It has been found out that social workers working in the GİGM staff take the roles of providing access to the most basic needs, supporting, counseling, advocacy, and ensuring conditions in terms of compliance with the ethical principles implemented. Social workers have some difficulties when they fulfill their professional roles and responsibilities. Conclusion:Refugees and asylum seekers have problems in reaching social services. At the same time, social workers need arrangements,supervison and education to practice their profession. Keywords: Social Work, Social Worker, Asylum Seekers, Refugees
