Analysis of the relation between social anxiety and metacognition on students of a private educatiunal institution

Social anxiety is a notable concern or fear occurs in one or more social situations when one is judged by others. In recent studies, it has been found out that metacognition has an important effect on social anxiety. Metacognition is a system that involves one's awareness of functions and scenes of the mind and his active control over these processes (Wells 2009). In this study, the correlation between social anxiety levels and metacognitions levels with students at a private educational institution will be observed. The research was carried out with 67 women and 39 men participants- in total 106- at a private educational institution in the 2017-2018 academic year. The participants were given the metacognitive scale (MCQ-30), Liebewitz Social Anxiety Scale and Personal Information Form to fill in. In this study that aims to contribute to literature; a significant correlation is observed among the anxiety subscale of Liebowitx Social Anxiety Scale, metacognition scale uncontrollability and risk subscale at a low level, in a positive way; and among avoidance subscale, positive beliefs, uncontrollability and risk subscales at a low level in a positive way, and among Liebowitx Social Anxiety Scale, positive beliefs, uncontrollability and risk subscale at a low level positively. Furthermore, when their correlation with the total score of metacognitive scale is taken into consideration, a low level, positive and significant correlation between Liebowitx Social Anxiety Scale and the subscales of anxiety and avoidance was found.
