Abstract (EN)
In this study, it is aimed to examine the social media addiction levels and self-censorship levels of university students in terms of various variables. The concepts in the study were examined in terms of gender, university, class level, department and perceived academic success. The participants of the study consists of 602 students studying in the education faculties of three universities in the Marmara Region. In the study, the data of social media addiction were collected with the scale of 'Social Media Addiction-Adult Form' (Şahin and Yağcı, 2017) and the data of self-censorship was '' Demand for Self-Censorship '' (Coşkun, Durak and Elgin, 2008). The '' Demographic Information Form '' was used to collect data on demographic characteristics (gender, university, class level, department, and perceived academic achievement). The analysis of the data obtained with the data collection tools in the research was carried out in the computer environment by using the package program 'SPSS Statistics 22.0'. T-test, One-Way Variance Analysis (ANOVA), Welch test, Levene statistic, Tamhane's T2 test, Scheffe test and Pearson Correlation Coefficient were used for data analysis. As a result of the research, it was found that there is a significant relationship between social media addiction and self-censorship. In this context, it was determined that social media addiction is higher in people with high self-censorship than those with low self-censorship. It was observed that social media addiction differs significantly from school to university and perceived academic success. Accordingly, it was determined that the average social media addiction of three universities is different from each other. In addition, it was observed that the participants whose perceived academic success was bad had higher social media addiction than the perceived academic success. In addition, it was determined that the desire to self-censor differs according to the university studied. In addition, it was observed that there was no significant difference between self-censorship and gender, grade level, perceived academic achievement, and department variables.
