The effect of social capital on motivation: The case of Kastamonu University example

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of social capital on motivation. When local and international literature is detailly examined, few studies has been reached investigating the effect of social capital on motivation undirectly whereas neither research examining this effect directly has been reached. When studies on social capital and motivation are examined, it is seen that they are mostly applied on private sector employees. For this reason, public sector as a sample was aimed primarily and a research on academicians among the employees of universities, which is one of the places where socialization is most common, was decided to search. The universe of this study consists of the academician staff working at Kastamonu University in Kastamonu. Questionnaire is used as a data collection tool in the research. Data has been obtained from 278 academicians who were reached by conveience sampling method but 269 available data has been obtained for analyses. SPSS 20 statistics program is used. Reliability, factor, correlation and regression analyses have been used for analysis. According to the analysis findings, it has been found that social capital effects motivation significantly and positively. It has been observed that shared vision and shared stories dimension, which is one of subdimensions of social capital, effect motivation significantly and positively. It was found that other dimensions of social capital (social networks, trust, norms, identity and shared language) do not effect motivation.
