Abstract (EN)

The aim of this research is to investigate the conflict situations between parents and school principals working in different socio-economic districts. In the view of this aim; most frequent conflict situation experienced by principals and parents, most frequent conflict resolution strategies used by principals, strategies that principals use to dealing with unreasonable parents when every effort of principals are futile, most frequent strategy principals use as a response of unreasonable parents? complaints, most frequent strategy used by principals to the extent the conflict situations be minimized and establish good relations with parents, most valuable strategy deemed principals to the extent the conflict situations be minimized and establish good relations with parents, the degree of counsellors? importance perceived by principals, the effect of different sub-cultures to parent-principal conflict and courses about conflict resolution principals had were investigated.Datas were gathered from 138 primary school principals working in Büyükçekmece, Kadıköy, Fatih, Bakırköy, Tuzla and Sultanbeyli counties in İstanbul. Datas were gathered by questionnaire form. This questionnaire form was created by researcher by getting help from Sturges (1965)?s questionnaire in his Master Thesis named as ?Analysis of Conflict Situations Communicated Between Parents and The Elementary Principal in The Westminster Elementary School District?.The result of the study indicated that: (1) Principals, without noticing their counties? socio-economic status, conflict with parents because of students? relations. (2) Principals, without noticing their counties? socio-economic status, use most frequently ?parent-principal meeting at school? strategy to resolve conflict with parents. (3) Principals use ?explaining they have done everything and let it stend? strategy when their efforts are futile. (4) Principals, without noticing their counties? socio-economic status, use ?listen to parent then explain? strategy as a response to unreasonable parent?s complaint. (5) In order to decrease conflict and establish good relations with parents, while most vulnerable strategy is ?encourage teachers to contact parents frequently? according to principals working in high socio-economic counties, it is ?parent education meeting? strategy according to principals working in average and low socio-economic counties. (6) In order to decrease conflict and establish good relations with parents, while most frequent used strategy is ?encourage teachers to contact parents frequently? according to principals working in low and high socio-economic counties, it is ?parent education meeting? strategy according to principals working in average socio-economic counties. (7) Principals, without noticing their counties? socio-economic status, perceive that counsellors are very important to guide unreasonable parents. (8) While different sub-cultures affect parent-principal conflict ?rarely? according to principals working in high and average socio-economic counties, it affect parent-principal conflict ?sometimes? according to principals working in low socio-economic counties. (9) Even though principals state that they had courses about conflict, it is seen that these courses are not about conflict. Key Words: Conflict, Parent-Principal Conflict, Primary School.
