Lexicography and education

The dictionary is one of the sources that people consult to for information. It is also called by people as a repository of information about words. As the available data show, the dictionary has been prepared in accordance with the common information technology of the age. That is why it has adapted to every new circumstances that have come to this day and has come up on a daily basis. Nowadays, most of the dictionaries are digital works published in electronic medium. It is possible to access and use these works from a computer, mobile phone or similar functional devices. The dictionary, which deals with this development and functioning, has become an independent science and institutionalized throughout the world in the last fifty years. However, the number of studies describing this field in Turkey is quite low. There is one study which is the book-sized belonging to the field which is also a translation. Others are an article or a paper-sized. In this study, which was prepared to make a small contribution in order to overcome this excuse, the dictionary, then the lexicon and its subfields were introduced, and at the end the relation between the dictionary topic and the education that was developed most closely by the dictionary science was discussed. Dictionaries are one of the indispensable sources of language education. The preparation of these dictionaries, the submission or development of these dictionaries is the basic aim of lexicography. However, in order for these to be realized in the direction of universal principles of science and to make dictionaries most beneficial for users, this branch of science needs to be matured. Despite Turkey have recently increased publication to reveal the outline of lexicography, the working principles are not enough studies to be told or shown interest with other sciences. Those who want to have general knowledge about lexicography are either looking for foreign sources or looking at Howard Jackson's book entitled as Introduction to Lexicography, which is translated by Mehmet Gürlek and Ellen Patat together. Howard Jackson's book is one of the most important works of the field, but since 2002 it has covered quite a lot of space in this area. It is also necessary to introduce this science to Turkish readers and researchers with examples in Turkish. This requirement has led to the construction of the survey on the question "What is dictionary knowledge?" and "How is dictionary science being used in education?" Despite having been written (Kashgarli Mahmut / Divan-ı Lugati't-Türk) in 1071 by the Turks, which is the first dictionary of Turkish, the lexicography is a rather new science or discipline for Turkish. For example, there is no book to explain the nature of lexicography in Turkey while institutions, university courses, books and periodicals specific to this field have been accepted as a separate discipline or field of study since the 1970s in the world. The definition of this field is mostly at the level of articles or proceedings. Therefore, it is very important to define lexicography, to show its sub-branches in general terms, to present them with examples all around the world. This is also the main objective of this study. It is also aimed to indicate the main points of lexicography, its sub-branches and the limitations of the study area, and to show the relationship between lexicography and education with examples. In order to introduce this discipline to Turkish readers and researchers, the research was built considering the questions 'What is lexicography?' and 'How is lexicography used in education?'. Therefore, the research was divided into two parts. Lexicography and subfields were dealt with in the first part, lexicology and education in the second part. This work is a review work. Thus, the available resources are considered sufficient for research. In addition, lexicography has a lot of relations with many fields such as semantics, morphology, vocabulary. Here, however, more attention is paid to the relevance of dictionary science to education. It is because there are educational sciences that lexicography will benefit the most.
