Abstract (EN)
In children with spastic CP (Cerebral Palsy), trunk control and postural balance responses are weak and there are defects in SMC (Selective Motor Control), known as voluntary isolated joint movement skills in the extremities. These disorders negatively affect gross motor functions. However, knowing the relationship between postural control and balance responses and extremity SMC is important for interventions. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between trunk control and postural balance and SMC of the extremities in children with spastic CP. 58 children with spastic CP between the ages 5-12 years and at GMFCS (Gross Motor Function Clasification System) 1-3 level included in the study. Demographic datas of the children were recorded. PBS (Pediatric Balance Scale) was use to assess the balance, TCMS (Trunk Control Measurement Scale) was used for trunk control, SCUES (Selective Control of Upper Extremity Scale) was used for upper extremity SMC, and SCALE (Selective Control Assesment of the Lower Extremity) was used for lower extremity SMC. As a result of the analyses, there was a statistically very good correlation between the participants' TCMS total score and SCALE total score (r: 0.70-0.75), and there was a good positive correlation between PBS total score and SCALE total score (r: 0.60- 0.70) (p<0.05). While there was a moderately positive correlation between the TCMS total score and the SCUES total score (r: 0.40-0.60), there was a low positive correlation between the PBS total score and the SCUES total score (r: 0.30-0.40) (p<0.05). In conclusion, poor trunk control and balance in children with spastic CP with mild to moderate gross motor function may be associated with impaired SMC in the extremities.
