Abstract (EN)

The purpose of the study was to analyse the perfectionism and academic achievement levels of sports science students according to various demographic variables and to identify the relationship between academic achievement and perfectionism. The population of the research was composed of 2018-2019 years' sports science students of Bartın University, Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University, Karabük University, Kocaeli University and Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University. The research was conducted on a randomly selected sample group consisted of 651 students (male students n=425; female students n=226). As data collection instrument, demographic information sheet which was developed by the researcher and "The Big Three Perfectionism Scale" which was developed by Smith, Saklofske, Stoeber and Sherry (2016) and adapted into Turkish by the researcher was used. The gathered data was analysed by SPSS. To analyse the effect of demographic variables (gender, active sport participation, extracurricular activity participation) on the participants' perfectionism levels MANOVA was conducted. For the analysis of demographic variables effect on participants' academic achievement Mann Whitney-U test was used. Also, to test the predictive power of perfectionism on academic achievement regression analysis was conducted. According to the results no significant difference was identified in the subfactors of perfectionism related with participants' gender and extracurricular activity participation. The rigid perfectionism levels of participants showed significant difference according to their extracurricular activity participation status. Significant differences were identified in the academic achievement levels of the participants related with their gender, active sport participation and extracurricular activity participation status. Besides, the regression analysis result revealed that perfectionism has no significant predictive effect on the academic achievement levels of the participants. xiii As a result, the study concluded that perfectionism did not have a predictive effect on academic achievement but active sports participation and participating in extracurricular activities had significant effect on academic achievement. Keywords: perfectionism, personal development, sport, academic success
