Examination of self-esteem and social anxiety level for students attending sports activities

This work aims to measure the relationship between students' social anxiety level and students' self esteem. For this research, Coopersmith Self Esteem Evaluation and Liebowitz Social Anxiety Evaluation measurements have been used to measure 782 students' condition who take secondary education in 2018-2019 education in academic years. Those data have been analyzed by using IBM SPSS 25.0 and Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test, Man Whitney U, Wilcoxon and Kruskal Wallis H Tests were examined by using Simple Linear Regression analysis. Data have been evaluated by factors such as students' gender, age, parents' educational status, sporting status and class of education. Findings of this study supports that there is no significant relation between secondary school students' self esteem and their gender, age, parents' educational status and class of education but sporting status has a direct effect on their self esteem and their social anxiety level. From the view of social anxiety level, sporting status has a relation between mother's (p=,017) and father's (p=,013) educational status while having no correlation between gender(p=,004), age(p=743) and class of education(p=,876). As a result, there is a negative relationship between students' social anxiety level and their self esteem with respect to secondary school students attending sports activities but positive relationship between anxiety level and lack of self esteem. Also study examined that there is positive relation between avoidance level and self esteem. Key Words: Sport, Sports Activities, Self Esteem, Social Anxiety
