Language in sport newspapers: Example of Stad and Fanatik newspapers

Sport is defined as an effective means of influencing the way individuals live and interacting with each other. Today, sport has become a universal structure that interests all people. Television, radio, internet, newspapers and magazines have a lot of pages. Sport magazines are one of the widely read magazines in Turkey. Many studies have been carried out on sports which are starting to take place in every field of our life and which become a universal phenomenon, from medical, economic, legal, religious, philosophical, psychological and sociological aspects. We have tried to examine the language used in sports journals to inform the readers here. Since language is a living entity, it is inevitable that there will be some changes in the terms and expressions of sports used over time. These differences have been tried to be revealed by making comparisons and inferences. In this study, the use of language in the sports journals is handled in different ways. Sports terms, phrases, war metaphors, and the changes in marking of the sports terms which are used in the sports journals, named "Stad" (1939-1958) and "Fanatik" ( 1995- continuing), have been compared and tried to be found out the changes of the terms used in the daily sports journals. It has also been tried to be determined the changes in the sports journals from the past to the present day. In addition, the Turkish equivalents of the quoted sports terms proposed by the Turkish Language Association are focused on. It has been evaluated which methods are used while proposing the Turkish equivalents for the quoted sports terms and whether they are being used widely today or not. At the same time, it has become almost customary for sports journalists to include intellectuals related to sports they have written for their teams or for other teams in daily newspapers and magazines. This tradition is still alive in some newspapers. We hereby agree to include examples of sports-related poetry from the journals "Stad" and "Fanatik" in our work in order to draw attention to this tradition.
