An investigation of the reasons for dropping out of sports by sports high school students in terms of different variables (example of aegean region)

This study investigates the reasons for the discontinuation of sports activities among 9th to 12th-grade students in Turkish Sports High Schools, focusing on four institutions in the Aegean region. Out of 1246 students surveyed, 135 had stopped participating in sports. The study used the scale developed by Maden, Koruç, Kocaekşi, and Arsan (2010) to analyze the findings. The discontinuation rates varied, with İncirliova Sports High School having the lowest rate (4.62%), and Manisa Sports High School having the highest rate (17.50%). Atatürk Sports High School, Recep Kerman Sports High School, and the overall average rates were 13.17%, 8.27%, and 10.43% respectively. Maternal education emerges as a significant factor in sports discontinuation. Students with mothers who completed middle school or lower were more likely to discontinue sports compared to those with mothers who completed higher education. However, maternal education didn't show a statistically significant influence on the Family and Academic Achievement & School Experience dimensions. The effect of the place of residence on sports discontinuation was also studied, revealing that students from less urban areas had a lower tendency to stop sports than those from more urban settings. In conclusion, a more comprehensive approach is needed to understand the reasons behind sports discontinuation among Sports High School students, considering factors like maternal education and upbringing environment.
