Examining the school motivation of secondary school students who participate and do not participate in sports teams

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to examine the school motivation levels of students who participate and do not participate in school sports teams. Therefore, the school motivation levels of middle school students who participate and do not participate in sports teams were examined in terms of variables such as gender, age, grade level, education status of parents, number of siblings, family unity and whether or not they do sports. The population of the study consists of 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students studying in middle schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education in Iznik District of Bursa Province in the 2024-2025 academic year. The sample of the study consists of a total of 437 students, 198 boys and 239 girls, who participate and do not participate in school sports teams from five different middle schools selected by the random sampling method. Only the Personal Information Form and School Motivation Scale used in the study. The data were evaluated with the SPSS 22.0 statistical package program. In the study; In terms of gender variable, a significant difference was found between girls and boys in favor of girls. In terms of class variable, motivation levels of 5th grade students were found to be higher than 7th and 8th grade students. No significant differences were found between student motivation levels in terms of variables of parental education status, number of siblings and family unity. In terms of age variable, school motivation of students aged 13 and under was found to be higher than older students. In terms of sports variable, school motivation of students who do sports was found to be higher than school motivation of students who do not do sports.
