Abstract (EN)

By studying the schoolbooks of German as foreign language, which are used in primary and secondary schools of Turkey, it is aimed to defining the auto- and heterostereotypes about Turks and Germans. The identification of stereotypes is based on the linguistic definition of Quasthoff. We are looking for typifying, catagorizing and generalizing expressions on Turks and Germans. According to the regional studies-based approach, the Turkish textbooks of German as foreign language are divided into three time periods (language-oriented, cultural-oriented, communication-oriented) to analyze their socio-cultural characteristics diachronically. For this purpose, we choose up Turkish schoolbooks of German as foreign language "Almanca Ders Kitabı", "Texte und Situationen" and "Wie bitte?". In the analysis we have determined that the textbook "Almanca Ders Kitabı" used between 1940-1973 contains positive stereotypical expressions about Turks (hospitable, patriotic freedom-loving) and about Germans (punctual, disciplined, nationalist). In "Texte und Situationen", which used between 1973-1997 Germany is characterized as modern and industrialized country. In addition, the German women are considered to be equal to men. The sociocultural content of "Wie bitte?" supports to communication in German. Turkey is seen as a land of tourism by Germans. It is characterized by its cuisine, weddings, crafts and folklore. The Germans are considered to be 'direct', 'punctual', and 'objective'.
