Evaluation of the effectiveness of tarantula cubensis extract in cats diagnosed with stomatitis

Abstract (EN)

Although the exact etiopathogenesis of stomatitis in cats remains unclear, it seems to be a manifestation of an inappropriate immune response to antigenic stimulation, potentially potentiated or exacerbated by viral infection. Current treatment methods include only medical treatment or extraction of premolar and molar teeth. Most cats undergoing surgical treatment require concurrent medical treatment to control inflammation; In some cats, it may require lifelong medical treatment. In this study, it was aimed to determine the effectiveness of tarantula cubensis extract in addition to routine treatment in the treatment of cats with stomatitis, which were brought to Fırat University Animal Hospital Small Animal Surgery Clinic in Elazığ and Hekimköy Veterinary Clinic in Adana with complaints of wounds in the mouth area. Antibiotic treatment with amoxicillin and clavulanic acid was given to 10 of the cats, which were diagnosed with stomatitis by clinical examination, without discrimination of age, race and weight, and the other 10 cats were given tarantula cubensis extract injections along with the same antibiotic treatment. Healing rates were evaluated macroscopically by 3 different surgeons, one week apart, and scored between 1 and 4. These values were transferred to a table and evaluated statistically using Mann Whitney U test and Wilcoxon tests. As a result of this study, it was observed that there was a statistically significant improvement in cats in which tarantula cubensis extract was used in addition to antibiotic treatment, compared to cats treated only with antibiotics.
