Abstract (EN)
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) describes the progressive loss of kidney function. It is a major public health problem, with an estimated 200 million individuals worldwide. In this study, polyamine oxidase (POA), parathyroid hormone (PTH), blood urea, serum creatinine, calcium, and phosphorous levels are evaluated as a biochemical marker for patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). The samples for this study consisted of 60 patients (28 males and 63 females) aged (22-76) years, and 40 apparently healthy individuals (20 males and 20 females) aged (22-76) years. The results of this study indicate that serum POA levels are significantly increased in patients with CRF compared to the control group. Serum calcium level decreased significantly before HD compared to normal controls and increased more after HD compared to before HD. Blood urea and serum creatinine were significantly increased in their levels in patients with CRF compared to those in the control group. Our results indicate that elevated serum POA levels can be considered as an independent predictive marker for the development of CKD. However, further studies are recommended to elucidate the role of POA gene expression in CKD patients and potential pharmacological intervention.
