Histopathology of parotid gland in rabbits after submandibulary gland excision

Abstract (EN)
The study was conducted on 21 female New Zeland rabbits weighing between 1200-1300 grs. The rabbits were randomly divided into three groups, seven rabbits in each. In group one; unilateral submandibulary gland excised and one month later parotid glands excised and evaluated , in group two bilateral submandibulary glands excised and one months later parotid glands excised, in group three no surgical operation made to submandibulary glands and one month later parotid glands excised and evaluated histopathologically. Semihtin sections from the specimen were analyzed for mucoid collection in asinary cells, dilatation of intercalated ducts, mucoid collection in intercalated ducts, cytoplasmic granule collection and myoepithelial cell count by using an optical microscope. Four areas were analyzed ( on an objective magnification of 40x, 100x, 200x and 400x) in four sections taken from each group. The mean values of the data pertaining to this areas were calculatedand the results were classified into four categories: Absent: - (0), mild: + (1), moderate: ++ (2) and severe: +++ (3). In this experimental study there was significant difference between group I and group III in dilatation of intercalated ducts(p:0.006) and mucoid collection(p: 0.001) in asinary cells (p<0.05), but no significant difference was identified between group I and III in cytoplasmic granule collection,(p:0.211) mucoid collection in intercalated ducts(p:0.174) and myoepithelial cell(p:0.74) count (p>0.05). A significant difference was observed between group I and group II in mucoid collection in acinary cells (p:0.040), but there was no significant difference was observed in other parameters (p>0.05). There was no significant difference was observed between group I and group II and between group I and group III in cytoplasmic granule collection, mucoid collection in intercalated ducts and myoepithelial cell count (p>0.05). There was significant difference was observed between group II and group III in mucoid collection in intercalated ducts (p:0.027). At the result of our study we can say that, significant histopathologic changes occur in parotid glands after unilateral or bilateral submandibulary gland excision.
