Mental verbs in "Suheyl u Nevbahar"

In this study, mental verbs in Süheyl ü Nevbahar, one of the works from the Old Anatolian Turkish period, have been examined. The Süheyl ü Nevbahar mathnawi, written by Hoca Mesud -a prominent 14th-century poet- as a translation from Persian, is a highly significant work for reflecting the linguistic features of that era. Within the study, mental verbs are analyzed under four main headings: Verbs of Perception (Senses), Verbs of Cognition, Verbs of Emotion and Verbs of Explanation. The mental verbs in Süheyl ü Nevbahar were examined and classified according to this distinction. While performing this classification, the meaning of the verb was primarily used as the criterion. To reach a common and general classification, various mental verb studies in foreign literature were reviewed alongside existing Turkish studies. During this process, theoretical and applied studies on mental verbs in English literature were translated, bringing the theoretical knowledge from these sources into Turkish literature. These translations were not limited to the mere transfer of information; they also aimed to contribute to the theoretical foundations of the mental verb concept in Turkish. Definitions, functional properties, and conceptual classifications of mental verbs provided by various researchers were compiled and presented in a schematic and systematic manner. This specific analysis of Süheyl ü Nevbahar is significant as it is an academic study focusing on all mental verbs in the work and is expected to offer a new contribution to Turkish language studies. The study is divided into three chapters. The first chapter provides information about Hoca Mesud and his work, followed by a brief evaluation based on various academic studies on Süheyl ü Nevbahar. The second chapter addresses the concept and definition of mental verbs, the Theory of Mind, mental verb classifications, and finally, Turkish studies on mental verbs within the conceptual framework. The third chapter classifies the mental verbs identified in the text and discusses them by demonstrating their usage within the couplets of the work.
