Özet (EN)

11 AIR OXIDATION OF MANGANESE IN WATER IN BATCH SYSTEM (M. Sc. Thesis) Nihan KAYA GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY June 2004 ABSTRACT In this study, it was aimed to remove the manganese in water with air oxidation in a batch system. This was performed at constant air flow rate by changing the concentration, pH and temperature. The amount of manganese non oxidized in water was determined for different conditions by considering the standard of TS 6289 ISO 6333 Spectrofotometric Methods. Oxidation efficiencies (%) were calculated by using these datas. The reaction was catalytically fulfilled when the efficiency was insufficient and also to observe the variation of oxidation time. It was observed that the oxidation of manganese occured in alkaline medium at pH 8-11, oxidation efficiencies were higher with increasing pH and oxidation time was lower. Furthermore, it was determined that glass packings added to the system caused distinct increase in the oxidation efficiency. Additionally, it was also determined that Mn02, sepiolite and clinoptilolite made catalytic effect and oxidation reaction was the first order according to Mn. Variation of reaction rate constant (k) with temperature was investigated and activation energy (Ea) for reaction was calculated. By means of those results, wastewater sample taken from entrance of Wastewater Treatment Plant of Çorum Municipality was studied and manganese was removed by oxidation process with achieving %61,54 oxidation efficiency.
