The life, personality and period of Sultan Ibrahim

The early life of Sultan Ibrahim, who ascended to the throne as the Ottoman sultan in 1640, coincided with one of the most depressed periods of the Ottoman palace. The death of his father Ahmed I at a young age, the cage life he lived in the Şimşirlik section of Topkapı Palace throughout his childhood and youth, and the execution of all his brothers except Ibrahim during, with the order of his other Sultan brothers Osman II and Murad IV who ascended to the throne in the meantime had a negative impact on Sultan Ibrahim's health. After all these, the reign of Sultan Ibrahim, who rose to the throne after Murad IV's death, did not start easily because the Sultan was dealing with major health problems. His diseases could not be diagnosed and effective treatment methods could not be found. Some progress has been made in this regard as a result of the efforts of the state officials. But Sultan Ibrahim's only problem was not his health problems. In addition to these troubles, the Sultan who spent his years as a prince in a cage without receiving any education, was also trying to learn state administration. Sultan Ibrahim, who did not have any knowledge or experience about sovereignty, was in need of information and guidance. These deficiencies were tried to be compensated with the suggestions of the people in the palace, especially Koçi Bey. On the other hand, especially in the last years of his reign, the fact that the people who made these instructions were not competent and conscientious and did not provide the Sultan with the necessary, accurate information about the events and situations caused great troubles and caused Sultan Ibrahim to be dethroned and executed.
