The effects of the Super League match results on the football clubs stock return

Abstract (EN)

Today, football has managed to become one of the most widespread and most popular sports branches in the world. It?s achieved position has changed it into an industry with a large turnover and in turn has forced football clubs to compete in economics besides sportive competition. In this newly formed context, the clubs have sought new funding resources in order to achieve financial success as a basis for sportive success and, as a consequence to this, they have formed corporations and gone public. Thus, the clubs have brought the competition on the fields up to the stock market.In Turkey, Beşiktaş, Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Trabzonspor football clubs have managed to list on the İMKB via sports corporations. The aim of this study is to determine the direction and magnitude of the relation between match results in the Süper Lig and the stock return of the clubs listed on the İMKB. In line with this objective, the history of football and football economics in the world, the fundamental properties of the football sector and the incorporation of football clubs in the world are covered in the first part of the study. In the second part, definitive information on the position and the historical developement of football in Turkey along with the information about foundation and developement of football clubs, their incomes and public offerings is given. And finally in the third part, the impact of match results on the stock return ratios of the four leading clubs is tested empirically using the OLS Method. In the light of the analysis, it?s discovered that there is a significant relationship between the wins and the stock return ratios of Beşiktaş and Trabzonspor clubs. Yet, no such relationship has been found for Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe clubs.
