Abstract (EN)
Sura (Soura) ancient city which is located 6 km. southern west of Demre (Myra), is one of two known oracle centers of Lycia. Sura was a territory of Myra Ancient City in antiquity. Sura's very few remains can still be seen today, two churches which belong to the Byzantine period have been detected in accordance with (with guidance of) old studies. One of the buildings is on the plateau where the city is supposed to have been established and named as Sura City Church in recent studies, however there is still very little information about this .The other is in the south of the deep valley that is on the west of this settlement and called the Sura Harbor or Valley Church according to the studies. In that region, observational studies and documentary works have been carried out by various researchers since the 19th century. This documentaries practices consist of architectural definitions and floor plans that lack in clear measurements. In the site examination, Sura Valley Church, that belonged to the early Byzantine period, is determined that it has a basilica plan, The eastern and western masonry still remain up to roof level and the southern side is preserved up to the window arches. In addition to this, the northern of eastern wall of the church has fresco residues and there is a chapel on south-east edge. Sura City Church is a building that has three different construction periods, the first two are remains of basilicas and the third is ruins of a small chapel. In site examination, a cistern was found underground of earliest church base. On the site that has more than one construction period, making architectural and historical evaluations in accordance with various research results done in the last century about ancient cities of Lycian region; making laser scanning, laboratory tests and analysis to help dating and material determination through technological equipment will provide new data and details about the Byzantine period church architecture of the region.
