Ecological-technological (eco-tech) design for a sustainable city: A case study on Güdül, Ankara

It is obligatory to take strong precautions against large ecological footprint, damage on agricultural and forest areas, serious effects of global climate change, high levels of greenhouse emissions in the country, discarding environmental policies and energy use in Turkey which is more than world total energy consumption. Ecological and technological design of new living areas which will be comfortable, healthy, clean, self sufficient and minimizing carbon consumption, contribute sustainability. The main aim of this thesis is to bring an approach for a sustainable city of future. Hypothesis is stated as: if small towns can be designed by ecological and technological approach, the risk of rising ecological footprint of these towns will be minimized. An ecological district named Güdül, near to Ankara metropolitan area, was selected as a case study area which has potential of sustainable living conditions. In this context, ecological and technological problems and potentials of Güdül were put in this thesis, SWOT analysis was made, spidergram was drawn and ecological footprint was calculated. Graphic and non-graphic data were linked with the help of geographic information systems (GIS), thematic maps were created and many analyses and three dimensional modeling were prepared. Site selection of eco-tech settlement in Güdül was made after sieve analysis and synthesis by GIS. Eco-tech design guide was generated under 6 main subjects for this site. vii The aim, performance objectives, strategy, methodology to achieve the strategy and performance criteria was set out in this guide. This eco-tech design guide, supported by photos, drawings, diagrams and graphics and which is pioneer in Turkey, is a tool for directing and increasing awareness of local governments, planners and designers, developers and community.
