The role of sustainable building materials in architectural design

Today, the concept of sustainability has emerged to produce common solutions to environmental, social and economic problems caused by people. Within the scope of the concept of sustainability, some campaigns, standards and legal regulations have been made in order to raise awareness of people on production and consumption in the joint works carried out at national and international level. Most of the legal regulations have been made for the construction industry The reason for this is that the construction sector uses a large part of natural resources and energy and it is the sector that causes the most damage to the environment and human health among the sectors. As a result of these legal regulations and joint studies, sustainable buildings have been started to be built with the effect of the concept of sustainability on building design in the construction sector. While designing sustainable buildings, it is aimed to create designs that are compatible with nature by trying to minimize the damage to the environment during the life of the building. One of the factors that minimizes the damage to the environment is the use of sustainable building materials in buildings. In this study, general information is given about the concept of sustainability, sustainable architecture, the properties of sustainable building materials, life cycle processes, sustainable building certification systems, and the use of sustainable building materials in buildings. Then, sustainable building materials are examined under three headings: sustainable building materials produced from bio-based materials with low formation energy, sustainable building materials produced from recycled materials and sustainable building materials produced from local natural resources. Then, sustainable building examples with pioneering and original designs in terms of materials and construction techniques were examined in order to understand the role of sustainable building materials in architectural design and to raise awareness for designers, researchers and students. Finally, the information obtained as a result of the studies carried out within the scope of the thesis was evaluated and suggestions were made for the use of sustainable building materials in the construction sector in today's conditions.
