Urban transformation practices in the context of sustainability: Mersin province Mediterranean district

The existence of transformation and change practices is inevitable in the planning of cities that have a dynamic and vibrant structure that have difficulty in responding to the needs of the rapidly increasing population. Urban transformation; these are comprehensive applications that change the cultural and socio-economic structure of the urban space and its inhabitants and aim to solve the existing problems in the urban area. In order to solve and eliminate existing problems, urban transformation implementation should be realized in a holistic and multi-stakeholder manner. It is important in terms of sustainability principles that multi-stakeholder approaches in sustainability-based urban transformation practices and the inclusion of local people, who will be directly affected by the transformation, as the main stakeholder. The aim of the thesis is to examine urban transformation practices and the projections of social, economic and environmental dimensions of sustainability in urban space. Thus, it is revealed that the urban transformation applications have many dimensions, the objectives change in the process and there are different methods for each application. With the conceptual framework created specifically for the concepts of sustainability and urban transformation, urban transformation projects planned to be implemented in the world, in our country and in the Mediterranean district of Mersin province in line with the components of sustainable urban transformation were examined, evaluated and results were obtained. In addition, the study was completed by making suggestions based on the results.
