The use of verbal memory in the context of sustainability and power at the museums of Turk

In the context of museum and verbal memory relation, the research base of this thesis is how museums were instrumentalized by the power of governments during the Republic History. Therefore, in this thesis, Mevlana Museum, Ankara Ethnography Museum, Vedat Nedim Tör Museum, The Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum of Gazi University, Yaşayan Museum (Living Museum), Istanbul Modern Museum and The Museum Branches of Community Centers each one of which has a different museum rhetoric?s were taken as the foundations of power and sustainability. In addition, it was questioned in the aspect of museum that how the products of oral literature were instrumentalized to legalize the power.In the thesis, oral memory was considered as a museum object and the ways this memory had been exhibited in museums were argued out with its historical development process. The results derived from the argument carried out on three main sections as follows:In the first section, Mevlana and Ankara Ethnography Museums which were handled in the context of verbal memory representation and power, made it possible to understand that museums are places where legends have been produced and they carry on this tradition. The relation, the museums mentioned above made, with verbal memory reflects the policies of the governments in the Early Republican Era.In the second section, power periods were discussed in the chronological order, however the single-party era was focused on. Community centers make us understand this era through museums. Community centers were first discussed with their historical relations to Türk Ocakları (representative offices of a political party). In this work, it is seen that local cultural items were provided place to live in the period of community centers. This place however consisted of a theme in western forms. As such, power appeared as the one which chose the past.In the last section, cultural policies which derived from the new world order were discussed on Vedat Nedim Tör Museum, The Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum of Gazi University, Yaşayan Museum and Istanbul Modern Museum in terms of verbal memory. When we look at museums in the context of verbal memory representations, before all the theoretical approaches to frame up the whole in the thesis, we can see that verbalism has been represented at museums. Furthermore, although museums are perceived as impartial, they are completely ideological foundations.
