Perceptions of Syrian refugee university students on social exclusion and gender inequality: Usak University sample

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the experiences of Syrian refugee university students on social exclusion and gender inequality. Materials and Methods: This research is a qualitative study conducted in Usak University with 20 Syrian refugee university students aged over 18, selected by snowball sampling method. Data were collected from the participants via a semi-structured interview from based on self-report. In this context, in addition to obtaining the basic socia-demographic information of the participations, their views on social exclusion; also open-ended question were asked to reveal their view sand experiences on gender inequality and social exclusion in terms of gender differentiation. The data of the study were obtained by face-to-face interview method in April-June 2018. Elde edilen veriler tematik içerik analizi ile değerlendirilmiştir. Findings: Within the scope of the research, it seen that the participants, have social exclusion in different dimensions. However, participants have the view in line with traditional gender roles related to gender. In addition, the social exclusion process experienced by the participants differ according to gender. Result: The social work is a profession related to the social functionality of the disadvantaged groups in the society and its integration with the society with the perspective of the individual within its environment. Therefore, it is considerable important to evaluate the social exclusion processes of women and male refugee university students who are disadvantaged with the effect of gender.
