The problems of syrian secondary school students in geometry teaching: The case of Hatay province

The main purpose of this study is to identify, examine, and offer solutions to the problems Syrian secondary school students encounter in geometry teaching by consulting the teachers who lecture Syrian students. The study group of the research consists of 32 teachers who work in private and state secondary schools in the province of Hatay in the 2020/2021 academic year and lecture Syrian students. This study is a qualitative research and descriptive survey model was used in this study. As a data collection tool, a structured interview form named "Teacher Interview Form Regarding Problems Encountered in Teaching Geometry to Syrian Secondary School Students" prepared by the researcher and presented to expert opinion was used in this study. The data obtained from the structured interview form were evaluated using the content analysis method. Having been migrating intensively since 2011 and having been helped in many areas within the scope of temporary protection ,the Syrian refugees, today, are densely populated in Hatay although distributed to almost 81 cities of our country, which make this study important in terms of identifying the issues encountered in the field of education in Hatay. In the study, the students' lesson process material usage, the process of legislation and the family collaboration, and the process of pre-education preparation are discussed separately, and a set of evaluations are carried out in consideration of the findings obtained from the interview forms applied to the teachers. The results of this study show that the syrian students have especially language and communication problems in the educational environments; that it is important to support their geometry teaching with the use of materials; that the families are unable to adequately support their children in respect of school-family cooperation; and that it is essential for the syrian students to receive preparatory education before starting the school.
