The role of public institutions and ngos in the urban integration of Syrian refugees: The case of Adiyaman

Since 2011, when the Syrian civil war broke out, Turkey has preferred a humanitarian stance by opening its border gates and accepting Syrian refugees. However, this situation brought with it a number of problems. The Syrian refugees who came to the country were initially kept in crisis centers, tents or container cities, and in time they dispersed to urban areas all over the country, especially border cities and metropolises. It is an important problem to meet the various needs of these people, who have settled in urban areas to continue their lives, to manage possible risks and to participate in social life. Various institutions and organizations within the public administration, especially the central government, have taken various measures and followed various strategies to reduce the effects of this crisis by ensuring the integration of Syrian refugees into the city and society. In this study, the role of public institutions and non-governmental organizations in the integration of Syrian refugees to the city was investigated in the case of Adıyaman province. In the research, the policies implemented and the strategies developed for the urban integration of the Syrian refugees were revealed, the role of public institutions and non-governmental organizations in this regard was determined, the NGOs that took the initiative in this regard in Adıyaman were determined, and their studies and results were evaluated. Qualitative research methods were used in the study. Interviews were conducted with Syrians in order to determine the problems experienced by Syrians in Adıyaman. The solutions produced by public institutions and non-governmental organizations to the problems experienced were tried to be determined through interviews. The results were evaluated in the theoretical framework.
